Uncertain Change

Posted on Sun Oct 24th, 2021 @ 9:44am by Lieutenant Commander Nimeeh Vixil

Mission: Not All Changes Are Welcome.
Location: Personal Quarters

Nim stared at her reflection in the full length mirror on the front of her closet. The red collar seemed startlingly out of place against her pale skin. Even the third pip on her collar felt like it was weighed far heavier than it did.

The former Chief Medical Officer had thought one of the hardest decisions to make had been the day she had decided to step down from the role, allowing someone else the chance to take over while she focused on command training.

It had been a challenge, keeping up with both work and with command training, but she had done it, and now here she was.

Taking a deep breath, she tugged her jacket downward, smoothing her hands over her hips before she reached up, brushing her long dark hair back over her shoulders.

The voice of her mother from the previous evening echoed through her mind again. "All this," her mother had said as she motioned toward the uniform and pips on her collar. "This is not you Nimeeh, it will not bring you joy or make your life complete. How long until you give up on this as well? Just like you gave up on your medicine."

The conversation had rattled her, struck a nerve.

Is that how she would be perceived? That she had given up? Medicine had been her passion. It had been her goal for so long, something she had worked so hard for. It wasn't something she had stepped back from easily, and she hoped that she could find a way to still stay involved in medical, even if it was from a distance, but command offered something else.

A challenge.

She had worked hard, she had studied hard, and she had achieved what she wanted, so why did she feel so uncertain about it?

"Computer, what's the time?" she asked quietly.

"The time is zero seven hours and forty-two minutes."

Reaching up, she pulled her hair back and secured it with a hair elastic from her wrist. "Is the Captain in his ready room?" she asked again.

"Affirmative."

"Well, I guess I better get this over and done with. Wish me luck," she murmured softly.

"Please restate the question."

Nim shook her head as she walked out the door and headed along the corridor. Her position, her rank, her quarters, everything else may change, but at least the absurdity of the computer was always going to be guaranteed.
