Preparing and Planning

Posted on Sat Jun 26th, 2021 @ 3:05pm by Lieutenant Acacia Thomas & Lieutenant Nimeeh Vixil

Mission: Guilty By Association
Location: Main Sickbay
Timeline: Backpost - Prior to arrival

Nim returned from the staff meeting, her mind still buzzing with thoughts. She wasn't exactly sure what their ETA was, but there was a lot they were going to have to get through before arrival, including making sure that their medical teams were up for what ever would be thrown at them, literally. With a sigh, she walked into her office, dropped a bunch of PaDD's on the desk before making her way through to sickbay proper, offering a smile to Acacia as she approached. "Lieutenant Thomas, just the exact person I needed to see."

Swallowing a few times against the ever present nausea, Acacia managed a wan smile in return. "I can say the same. What's the word?"

"You okay there?" Nim asked, concern in her voice. "Sit down, I'll get you a glass of water, then we can talk."

Acacia tried to wave her off, but raising her head started the roiling in her belly once more and she whispered under her breath "We were doing so well, you and I." Speaking louder so Nim could hear her she answered "I'm fine, how was the briefing?"

Replicating a glass of cool water, Nim handed it to Acacia and moved back to her own chair. "It was..." she sighed. "We'll get to that in a minute. How are you going? Is everything going okay?"

Sipping the water obediently she took a breath and let it out again. "I'm alright." she answered, though not quite as wholeheartedly as she usually did. "Just the ever present nausea is bad today."

"Nausea?" There was a moment of confusion on Nim's face as she registered the words in her distracted mind. Absently, she grabbed a tricorder, flipped it open and scanned Acacia's body, her eyes widening slightly. "Acacia..." she asked softly, looking up and meeting the surgeon's eyes. "Uhmmm, did you realise you're pregnant?"

"I might have known that..." she admitted with a soft smile downwards in the direction of her belly "I might have also been giving myself anti-emetics so I didn't have to share that information with anyone just yet."

Nim nodded slightly. "You know you shouldn't self medicate, even though you're more than qualified," she said gently. "Always better to be safe than sorry, you could have come to me. Are you doing okay? Is everything else alright?"

"I didn't want to share any more than I have to. Amelie knows, and now you." her eyes flickered from Nim, to the deck plating. "It's going to be obvious soon enough I guess."

"Yes, well, when you're growing an entire other being in a body as small as yours, it does tend to become obvious rather early on," she said with a small smile. "How is Jack taking the news?"

She heaved a huge sigh and her shoulders fell, defeated. "I don't even know where in the universe Jack is. The marines are deflecting me at every opportunity. I told him via a holo-message...but...I want. " she paused to make sense of her jumbled thoughts. "To know he's safe? To have him back where I can watch out for him?"

"Want me to see if I can find anything out?" Nim offered. "I have a few contacts, I might be able to get some information on where he is, or how you can contact him." She sighed softly. "I'm sorry," she said, scooting to sit next to Acacia, putting an arm around her shoulders. "It must be so hard for you."

"You can try, but I'm hitting a hard wall that I think has the signature of one Major General Alan Frost all over it. I'm being deliberately put off every time I contact him. They delight in telling me that Colonel Jason 'Jack' Frost has no wife on file. Like the damn ring actually matters to them." her voice was bitter, and cracked on the last line with the stress of the situation. A pair of tears escaped her closed eyes and tracked down her cheeks. She leaned on Nim slightly before wiping her face roughly "Sorry."

"Don't apologise," Nim said softly. "That's what I'm here for." She squeezed her arm around Acacia's shoulders gently. "Let me see what I can do, okay?"

"If you want to, I won't stop you. I don't think you'll have any more success than I did.". Her wry smile caused her eyes to crinkle. "How's the baby look? I could use a full prenatal."

"Then let's have a look shall we?" Nim said warmly. "Come on, dry your eyes Momma and let's check on this baby of yours. Is there anything you don't want me to tell you?"

"Lets leave the sex a surprise. Other than that..." Acacia smiled wanly through her tears and wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. "I swear I cry more than a waterfall."

Nim worked in silence for a moment, scanning, taking measurements and making notes before she turned her full attention back to Acacia. "Everything looks fine," she said with an encouraging smile. "Your HCG is a little high, so we'll just keep an eye on that. It looks like you're just on ten weeks." She nodded slightly. "Baby is happy and healthy..." a tap of a button on the tricorder and the raspy thump, thump, thump of the baby's heart could be heard. "See?"

The change in the woman was subtle, as she heard the heartbeat inside her for the first time. Something softened, and a deep breath was exhaled in a hiss of sound. "Hi..." Acacia's fingertips touched her still mostly flat belly.

Nim smiled again. "I put some images in your medical file, but I'll transfer some to your personal files as well, just so you don't accidentally see something you don't want to. You have a very happy and healthy baby," the doctor said warmly. "Let's just make sure Momma stays that way too, okay?"

"That...might be a hard goal to manage" Acacia admitted quietly licking her lips "But...I'll try."

"Let's start with a coffee and a cupcake and we'll take it from there," Nim said with a smile. "Come on, I don't know about you, but I need a break from Sickbay anyway."

"Ooh...cupcakes! Count me in."
