What If?

Posted on Wed Nov 4th, 2020 @ 9:18am by Lieutenant Nimeeh Vixil & Lieutenant Commander Andromeda Lightfeather 'Andi'

Mission: Broken
Location: Main Security Office

Nim walked along the long corridor in the security section. It was a section of the ship she had rarely spent much time in, other than the odd trip to the brig to render medical aid to a guest.

Now she was here for very different reasons. She needed some information, and she needed to speak with Commander Lightfeather.

Finally, arriving at the correct door she reached for the chime to announce her presence and waited to enter.

Working her way through the latest information the Commander had given her on the murder she jumped when her door buzzer sounded, she grumbled under he breath "enter" she said loudly.

As the doors parted, Nim stepped through and gave a smile. "Commander Lightfeather, I hope this isn't an inconvenient time? I was hoping you might be able to spare a few moments to answer some questions for me?"

Andi looked at the door and smiled at a familiar face "hello Doctor, do please come in and have a seat, I will answer questions if I am able" she said indicating the seat in front of her.

Dropping into the seat, Nim crossed her legs neatly, her hands resting in her lap. "I'll be honest, I'm not overly familiar with the way Starfleet metes out punishment for those that break rules and regulations, I was wondering if maybe you could help shed some light on it for me? I have a few questions if you don't mind? Like, to start with, what would happen if an officer was to willfully and negligently abandon their duty post?"

Andi thought for a moment "that is essentially dereliction of duty, there are many ways someone can do this, what you just mentioned is one, but a dereliction of duty generally refers to a failure to conform to rules of one's job, which will vary by tasks involved. ... It means an intentional or conscious failure of an employee to do his/her duty. In this case, they walked away, of course, the punishment varies, who was it and how serious was the neglect?" Andi asked becoming serious.

"I see...." Nim remained silent for a moment. "What about directly disobeying orders? I mean, let's say, hypothetically, look at our current situation. What if someone was to directly violate the prime directive as it stood, how much trouble would they get into?"

"Violating General Order One!! Okay, that is a massive faux pas, JAG will look at it and the reasons investigated worst-case scenario if it was a ship Captain which did it, then the chances are slim they will ever command a ship again, but again it all relies upon the reasons same for someone below the Captain, a possible demotion, a note on one's permanent record and a posting to the rear lines away from any temptation to do it again, these are worst-case scenarios and I cannot speak for certain on what JAG will do to the individual, all I do know is they will look at something like that from every angle and study the person reasons and then decide, why are you asking Doctor, even hypothetically?" Lightfeather asked.

"Curiosity is all," Nim smiled gracefully as she rose slowly to her feet. "Thank you, Commander, your time and information have been most informative and helpful but I shan't bother you any longer."

Looks at the Doctor suspiciously "I see" was all Andi said feeling that there was more to these questions than the Doctor was letting on, but she was not a Counsellor nor an XO so if someone did not want to open up to her there was nothing she could do. Smiling as the doctor stood up, so did she "not a problem doctor, happy to help" Andi said with a smile and watched the Doctor leave her office, she sat back down contemplating what just happened.
