On The Basis of Friendship

Posted on Tue Apr 14th, 2020 @ 6:14am by Commander Bianca Caselli & Lieutenant Nimeeh Vixil

Mission: Under A Glassy Surface, Where We Don't Belong...
Location: Ships Lounge

Nim walked into the lounge, ordering herself a hot chocolate from the replicator and carrying it across to the furthermost booth again, sliding in before she held her mug up to her lips, blowing softly across the hot liquid. It was late, but she couldn't sleep. It seemed to be a trending thing.

Long days in medical, short nights, lack of sleep, haunted by nightmares, and now with the random abduction, it seemed that a peaceful night sleep was something that was just completely out of the question.

Reports had been filed, everything had been updated. The ship had departed Earth and all the requisition and crew transfers had been resolved. She could have gone back to her quarters, but what was the point? She'd just be alone. Lately the darkness hadn't been kind to her thoughts, which was why she found herself in the lounge. It was almost completely empty, but the few signs of life that were around were enough to immediately make her feel more at ease. Seeing Nim slide into the booth at the back, Bianca replicated herself a cup of chamomile tea and followed her over. "Mind if I join you?"

Though the intrusion was surprising, it certainly wasn't unwelcome. "Of course Commander," she said, motioning to the other side of the booth. "Couldn't sleep?"

Bianca took a sip of her tea and shook her head. "Honestly, I haven't even tried. Ever since, well, everything, the darkness of my quarters just feels creepy. I leave lights on, I play music, but I always feel on edge."

Nim nodded slowly. "I take it security hasn't been able to uncover any more information then?" She watched the XO over the table, noting the exhaustion clear on her face.

"There's nothing that's been found so far. All traces of the transport were completely erased. The transporter operator was spoken to, even he doesn't understand. He saw us enter, he said he initiated the transport, but there was some kind of a malfunction. The console suffered a short. Operations think it's likely that the transport was hijacked which caused the overload, but what we can't figure out is who or why. No one knew we were transporting anywhere. It was a last minute decision."

Nim took another sip of her drink, letting out a shuddery sigh. "I don't know, somehow that makes me feel even less at ease," she said quietly. "I don't like uncertainty. I much prefer to be able to look my enemies in the face instead of being afraid of every shadow."

"We will find out what happened," Bianca reassured. "In the interim, we all just do the best we can do I guess," she shook her head. "I don't like it any more than you do, but until Security is finished investigating there's not much we can do except wait."

Another sip of hot chocolate, a shake of her head and a soft laugh. "You know, I think that is probably the sentiment I dislike most. 'Nothing to do except wait.' it's up there with 'Patience is a virtue'. Patience is far from virtuous. Patience is annoying and frustrating, especially to those of us that have little of it." Nim shook her head, her annoyance quite obvious.

Bianca stifled a laugh. "Well, I'll keep that in mind Lieutenant," she said, her voice filled with mirth as she spoke.

"Nim." The Trill shook her head. "Call me Nim, at least when we're off duty. It seems kind of ridiculous, I mean all that pomp and ceremony? We were abducted together, it kind of forms a pretty solid basis for friendship doesn't it?"

"Nim it is then," Bianca replied quietly. The unexpected statement of friendship took her by surprise, but what was even more surprising was that she found it welcoming. Perhaps the doctor was right, perhaps their experiences were one that would forge a strong friendship, but no matter, which way, in the right then and there, she was grateful for the companionship that it provided. "So," Bianca smiled over the rim of her tea cup. "Do you always hang out in the lounge late at night?"
